Improved Tool Life by 350 per cent on CNC Machining Centre

Story added 20 May 2010.

Called in by a leading vehicle manufacturer due to a bottleneck problem created when tapping forged steel crankshafts on a Makino A61 machining centre, LMT’s Fette division was able to improve tool life by 350 per cent and reduce the time to produce the thread by two seconds. When combined, LMT’s solution was able to generate an overall saving of £25,000 in the annual production of 140,000 components.

The use of LMT’s Rasant V-R 15-1K taps to produce the M14x1·5p blind threads that were 48 mm deep (3·5:1 depth ratio) on the 18-20 HRC, SAE 1548 forged steel crankshafts was aided by the through coolant supply capability and the HSS-E-PM TiCN Plus coating applied by LMT to the tools.

The taps have a 15 deg right hand spiral with a large secondary relief to aid free cutting on tougher materials. In particular this range of taps is suitable for blind hole applications on horizontal machining centres and in this application the spindle was run at 25 m/min cutting speed.
