Birmingham precision engineering firm sees contracts take off

A family-owned tooling manufacturer and subcontractor is flying high following the purchase of a five axis machine earlier this year.

Burcas installed its first five axis machine in August to supplement three axis prismatic metalcutting and multi-axis mill-turning at the West Midlands machining centre.

One of the first jobs on the five axis machine was a mild steel component for a UK aero engine manufacturer.

"The aerospace sector has been growing rapidly year on year and will continue to do so until at least 2015," comments managing director Mike Burrows.

Approvals from firms including GE Aviation, Messier Dowty, Bombardier and Goodrich have been received, he adds.

Some 40 per cent of the firm's £5 million turnover is related to aerospace subcontracting and it is hoped that can be doubled in the coming years, Mr Burrows states.

Burcas first became involved in aerospace work in 2002 when Alstom approached the firm for use of its CNC lathe.

The firm was established in 1941 as a factoring company distributing files, drills and small tools during the war.
