Five axis machining centre benefits F1 team

A five axis machining centre installed at Crosby Composites has benefited a Formula One team.

The centre, from CMS Group, machines complex compounds from composite materials to high accuracy.

Some 17 components produced on the Ares 3626 machine were supplied to a Formula One team, with all parts fitting the car without interference.

This meant reworking and fitting up could be avoided and was the first time in the team's history this had occurred with any composite parts.
Founder of the company, Paul Crosby, explains: "The Formula One market generally requires a maximum run of 16 parts.

"Utilising CNC technology is the only practical way to machine repeatedly to the required level of accuracy."

The five axis machining centre allows for pendulum machining or single component working and features protection from the ingress of carbon dust to the machine.

Crosby Composites was established in 1982 by Mr Crosby, a racing car engineer.
