Subcontractor Chooses Whitehouse for 5 Axis Machining

Essex subcontractor, Peter Copsey Engineering (PCE), half of whose business is designing and manufacturing components and assemblies for the broadcasting industry, installed its first 5-axis machining centre in March this year - a Japanese-built OKK VP600 vertical-spindle, bridge-type model from UK agent, Whitehouse Machine Tools.Regarding his selection of the OKK in preference to two other shortlisted machines, Mr Collins cites the 11 tonnes installed weight and very robust rotary axes on the VP600, particularly the 120-degree tilting trunnion that supports the rotary table. He witnessed, and was very impressed by, an Airbus pipe being 5-axis milled from the solid at Whitehouse Machine Tools' Kenilworth technical centre. The 'manual guide' option on the Fanuc control is being supplied, similar to other conversational programming systems on the shop floor. Price and delivery of the OKK were favourable, and as Mr Collins had used Brother machines from Whitehouse at a previous firm, he knew the agent's service to be good.

Whitehouse Engineer a Solution

A Japanese-built, 4-axis, horizontal machining centre from OKK, delivered by UK agent Whitehouse Machine Tools in January 2007 to subcontractor, Clanalvex Precision Engineering, is able to perform nearly all machining operations on valve bodies in one CNC cycle."Customers are looking for better quality and faster delivery compared with even five years ago, so a machine tool must be both accurate and reliable, and the supplier must be able to demonstrate a high level of service back-up." He explained that three of the best-known suppliers in the industry were approached in addition to Whitehouse. Details of the four shortlisted HMCs were evaluated with the help of a spreadsheet and the OKK was the clear leader for the intended application at Clanalvex. A professional demonstration at Whitehouse's showroom in Kenilworth, and an agreement that the supplier would guarantee next-day delivery of a replacement spindle should that ever prove necessary, clinched the deal.
